Dean Files Legislation to Create Convention Center Authority

Monday, August 10th, 2009, by Blake Farmer

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean wants to appoint a nine-member board to manage the development and financing of a new convention center.

He filed the necessary legislation with the Metro Council Monday.

Metro Finance Director Rich Riebeling says recent concerns about the over-budget communications contract for the project underscores the value of the oversight board.

The Metro Development and Housing Agency has managed the predevelopment phase. Construction is expected to begin next year, though the Metro Council has still not voted for final approval. It’s expected to cost well more than $600 million, paid for by tourist taxes.

The Metro Council would confirm members of the Convention Center Authority and will vote on the resolution to form the board August 18th. Members would be appointed next month.
