Metro Coordinator of Elections Confirms 5th District Recall Election

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009, by Blake Farmer

Metro Nashville’s election administrator confirmed a thousand signatures Tuesday and said petitioners have successfully forced a recall election for the 5th council district. Constituents charge Councilmember Pam Murray with being unresponsive, and they want her out of office.

Murray will automatically be on the ballot. Election administrator Ray Barrett says challengers who live in the East Nashville district need just 25 signatures.

“If they do that and qualify, they will be on the ballot whatever date the Election Commission sets the day.”

The Metro Election Commission will meet Friday morning to set the special election and a deadline for candidates to file, which could be as soon as the end of the month.

Barrett says Murray’s recall election is likely the first since Metro Government was established in 1963.
