Tens of Thousands Apply at VW Plant; Some Won’t Start Until 2011
Volkswagen has received some 35 thousand applications for factory jobs at its plant in Chattanooga. That’s for some 1,500 spots on its assembly line there.
But it could be more than a year before the company is ready to fill some of those jobs. That’s because the factory is still under construction. Human Resources Manager Ryan Rose says the plant won’t start making cars until 2011.
“Really, it’s important that folks understand that’s going to be an ongoing process to build the plant, install the equipment, get everyone trained, launch the first shift, later launch the second shift, and each milestone carries with it some hiring.”
When you count maintenance and office workers, about 2,000 people are expected to work at the plant; in total Volkswagen has received some 65 thousand applications.
