State May Release 3,300 Prisoners to Make Ends Meet
The state would release at least 3,300 non violent felons if forced to implement budget cuts called for by Governor Phil Bredesen.
Correction Commissioner George Little said during budget hearings there’s little choice because he’s already squeezed out savings by eliminating 400 unfilled positions in his department.
“We would be looking at our entire felon population, both in our prison system and local jails, and essentially working with those who present the least risk to the community in either population.”
Little says he’s not using scare tactics, just trying to make ends meet.
