TN Among States on the Downward Slope of H1N1

Tuesday, December 08th, 2009, by Jacqueline Fellows

Tennessee is seeing the same downturn in the number H1N1 cases as the rest of the nation.

Dr. William Schaffner chairs the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He says the swell of H1N1 cases may be over, but the flu season isn’t over yet.

“We’re actually now anticipating, that once we get more deeply into December and certainly into January, that we’ll see an increase again. And most of those infections will be seasonal influenza, different strains, with H1N1 influenza mixed in.”

Schaffner says the H1N1 virus is “smoldering,” that is, there continue to be patients in the double digits getting treated for the virus, but there aren’t as many cases.

Restrictions on who can receive the H1N1 vaccine are now lifted, and Schaffner urges everyone to get it.
