Agriculture Takes Center Stage At Gubernatorial Forum

The candidates running to be Tennessee’s next governor appear to be on the same page when it comes to helping Tennessee farmers and ranchers. All six say they think preserving the family farm is important. As is protecting state dollars earmarked for improving farmland.

Each candidate answered questions during an agricultural forum Monday. One of the major concerns that came up is the Southeast’s dwindling water supply and neighboring state’s interest in Tennessee water. Republican candidate, Congressman Zach Wamp:

“That’s one of our greatest strengths. One of our greatest assets is our water resources and we’re going to protect it with every ounce of our energy.”

Both Georgia and Mississippi have been involved in water disputes along the Tennessee state line.

Democratic candidate, Kim McMillan, says part of the fight will have to include understanding the larger picture and sitting down with water conservation experts.

“So, as Governor, the first things I would do is listen to people who know more about the issue than you do.”

The six candidates made their remarks at the Tennessee Association of Conservation Districts annual convention.

All the gubernatorial candidates also pledged, if elected, they would do their best to fully fund extension agent positions. They help keep farmers up to date on technology and farming practices.
