Top Runners Up in District 9 Board Race Confirm Interest in Coverstone Seat

Wednesday, July 01st, 2009, by Blake Farmer

The second and third place finishers in last year’s Metro school board race say they’re interested in taking Alan Coverstone’s place as the West Nashville representative.

Coverstone resigned this week after less than a year in the District 9 post because he’s interested in a district job overseeing charter schools. Coverstone won 50% of the vote even in a crowded field of six candidates.

Meharry professor Lee Limbird captured second and confirms she’s still interested in the job. Former manager and retired teacher Paul Brenner came in third. He says the Metro Council should consider vote totals from last year and interview those candidates before appointing someone who didn’t run.

“It would just seem sort of funny to me that if they pick somebody else, they would pick somebody who didn’t even work for their seat.”

The Metro Council could fill the vacancy as early as August. That person would serve until next year’s general election.

Hear interviews with each District 9 candidate recorded last year.
