Ramsey: It’s a Shame an Intern Policy is Needed

Recent revelations of an inappropriate relationship between a senator and his intern have made it clear that the state legislature has no written policy regarding interactions between members and their interns.

Senator Paul Stanley recently admitted to having an affair with an intern after her boyfriend threatened blackmail. Stanley has stepped down as chair of a senate committee, but is holding on to his office.

Until now, Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey says he’d never seen the need to develop rules governing relationships with interns.

“It should be common sense, it should be human nature, but if that policy needs to be in writing I’m all in favor of having a policy in writing, it’s just a shame, in my opinion, that that should come to that.”

The Republican leader stopped short of saying he’d actively work towards developing new rules.

Ramsey says he’s saddened by Stanley’s behavior and is praying for him as a friend. He says whether or not the senator keeps his seat is a matter for voters to decide.
