Fisk University Jubilee Singers will leave next weekend for an eleven-day tour of Ghana.
The U.S. State Department invited the group that specializes in Negro Spirituals to perform as part of Ghana’s fiftieth year independence celebration.
Jubilee Singers musical director Paul Kwami is a native of Ghana and says it’s important to everyone who’s going on this trip.
“For the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who again introduced the world to the Negro Spiritual in 1871, for them to be taking the music back to Ghana officially for the first time makes it very special.”
Kwami hopes to record the group while they are in Ghana and release a CD sometime in October.
