Nashville mayoral candidate Karl Dean is issuing ads of his own to combat claims made by his opponent, Bob Clement.
Clement has pledged not to raise property taxes. Dean has refused to do the same, calling the pledge a gimmick.
Clement’s newest ad features a clip of Dean from Saturday’s mayoral debate, saying he could think of, quote, “all sorts of scenarios” where the city might need to raise the tax rate.
In response, the Dean campaign has produced its own ad accusing Clement of twisting Dean’s words and playing old-fashioned politics. It shows a different clip from the same debate, in which Dean says, quote “I’ve said I’m not raising taxes.” The clip is followed by a list of other dates on which Dean has made that statement.
The election is September 11. All of the early voting locations are now open.
