Longstanding Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is questioning the new Tennessee law requiring voters to present photo ID at the polls. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed the law this spring. Critics say it could disenfranchise voters.
Durbin spoke in Nashville yesterday alongside Congressman Jim Cooper, and said IDs acceptable under the new law aren’t easy to come by. That’s in part because the law won’t take state-issued employee, student or veteran’s IDs.
“In urban areas, there are very few places to go, and when you do go to those places for an ID you may be in for an hour-long wait.”
Tennessee is among several states that have recently passed such laws, which are now under scrutiny from the U.S. Justice Department.
Last week Durbin sent Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam a letter asking about the state’s plan to make sure IDs will be available quickly and free of charge. Haslam’s office said yesterday it hadn’t yet received that letter.
