Tennessee’s two Republican Senators split today in the vote on a federal highway bill. The measure extends $109 billion in funding to thousands of construction projects.
Senator Lamar Alexander voted yes, saying his decision was based in part on his experiences as Governor, recruiting the auto industry. Alexander says a good four-lane highway network was crucial to drawing companies like Nissan and GM.
But Senator Bob Corker balked at how the measure was funded. Corker says it’s been designed to take ten years to pay for two years of spending – a move he calls a budget gimmick.
The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 74 to 22.
