In some Metro Council district, last night was just the beginning. Five races are going to a runoff.
The runoffs are required because no one got more than 50 percent of the vote. The races are mostly for seats with no incumbent, like District 4 where Michael Craddock is term limited. A former staffer for Mayor Karl Dean named Brady Banks nearly won outright, with 46 percent of the vote. He faces Army veteran David Patterson.
Despite being recalled by voters in 2009, former council member Pam Murray was able to force a runoff in Inglewood’s District 5. She faces political newcomer Scott Davis.
East Nashville’s District 6 and Priest Lake’s District 13 were also open seats.
The only incumbent sent to a runoff is Robert Duval. His opponent, Page Turner, was supported by the mayor.
Runoff elections will be held September 15th. Early voting starts August 26th.
