Nashville voters overwhelmingly approved two amendments to the Metro Charter on the ballot.
Amendment one will give the mayor more time to prepare a budget before presenting it to the Metro Council.
BJ Jefferson is an event planner at Vanderbilt Law School and says more time makes sense. She voted for the amendment.
“I have to work with budgets and that kind of stuff, so to me, if you want to extend my deadline, go ahead.”
A charter revision in 2006 moved then-Mayor Bill Purcell’s budget deadline from late May to March so the Council could have more time to review it. This year’s amendment moves the date back to split the difference, making the deadline May 1st.
Amendment two passed similarly with more than three-quarters of the votes cast in favor of defining term limits in Metro Government. Now the charter says any more than two years of a partial term counts as a full term. It also creates a distinction between at-large and district seats, so term limits do not apply if council members can switch seats.
