Sam Moore, the surviving half of R&B duo Sam & Dave, is suing the producers of the 2008 movie “Soul Men.” He says they cribbed from the history of the Memphis duo, and tarnished the singer’s reputation with swearing, lewd sex and racial slurs.
The lawsuit is against movie producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, MGM Studios, and Concord Record Group. It alleges the character played by Samuel L. Jackson in the movie rips off Moore’s legacy and shreds his name as an entertainer.
One of the singer’s lawyers, Arnold Lutzker, says Moore spent decades building up his reputation as the “Soul Man.”
“Those words are now, and into the future, going to associated with this film in a way that will tarnish his reputation going forward.”
Lutzker says Moore tried to deal with the film’s producers before its release in November, but they ignored him.
The lawsuit calls for a jury trial and monetary damages. “Soul Men” grossed about $12 million.
