Tennessee lawmakers, unable to agree on a state budget for the coming year, are taking the weekend off.
The state House of Representatives has already left, and is due back Wednesday.
At this hour, the state Senate Finance Committee is trying to agree on a budget that both Republican and Democratic senators would be willing to vote for. Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis expresses the hope.
“There is a possibility we will bring the appropriations bill out of Finance.”
Senators say they may take the budget up tonight. Aside from reconciling between the two parties, they also have to level with the lower chamber. The House budget continues to put money toward bonuses for state employees and dips further into reserves.
