Despite President Bush’s low approval ratings, U.S. Senate candidate Bob Corker believes a campaign visit by the President this week will rally support among his conservative base and win over some new voters.
According to the most recent poll in Tennessee, President Bush’s approval rating of 42% was only two percentage points higher than the national average.
On Wednesday, President Bush will be the guest speaker at a $2,100 a plate fundraiser for Corker.
Earlier this month, former President Bill Clinton helped democratic senate nominee Harold Ford Jr. raise $1 million dollars.
Corker spokeswoman Alexia Poe says the presidential campaigning underscores the significant differences between the candidates.
“Congressman Ford welcomed President Bill Clinton to Tennessee and we feel when Tennessean look at the values of President Clinton and the values of President Bush they prefer the values of president Bush.”
The U.S. race between Harold Ford Jr. and Bob Corker is one of the most watched Senate races this year because of the political shift it could create.
A recent poll by Ford’s campaign shows the two candidates at a statistical dead heat.
The President’s visit on Wednesday marks his second visit to Nashville this year. Bush spoke in February at the Grand Ole Opry after his State of the Union Speech.
