Fisk University has recieved its first matching funds from the Andrew Mellon Foundation.
Last year, the foundation promised the financially struggling school a gift of 2 million dollars if the university can raise twice that on its own.
Earlier this month, Fisk reported back that it had gathered just over 1 point 5 million in donations. In response, the Mellon Foundation sent a check for more than 780-thousand dollars.
Officials say Fisk’s fundraising levels are at the highest point in a decade-including a separate 1 million dollar gift from the Mellon Foundation. They also report that the university is doing a bettter job of collecting money due from students, grants, and other accounts. Those efforts, combined with the challenge grant, mean Fisk is on track to end its fiscal year without a budget deficit.
