Today is the deadline for Spring Hill’s 2,900 GM workers to decide if they will take a buyout. It’s still unclear how many will take the option, though last month’s news that the plant didn’t land GM’s new small car was surely a blow to workers.
The buyout offer includes $20,000 cash and a $25,000 dollar car voucher, along with pension benefits based on years of service.
Last month, UAW Local 1853 Chairman Mike Herron said once the buyout program runs its course, workers could be able to move within GM.
“There’s going to be some opportunities that are going to be made available for folks that would like to transfer to other plants, if that’s what they choose.”
Union officials say they are not encouraging employees to stay on or take buyouts, noting that the decision to leave the company is a personal one.
