Nashville’s hockey and football stadiums have attracted fans from all over the country. But the city’s upcoming $335 million soccer arena has bigger plans: it wants to see spectators from all over the world.
Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre says it should come as no surprise.
“Soccer is a global sport,” Ayre tells WPLN News. “When we think about bringing the stadium to life, we think about: Is there something there for everybody?”
Ayre says the push for soccer is also a testament to Nashville’ growing diversity, and it’ll be reflected in the food and events chosen for the stadium.
The stadium is less than two months away from its debut, and it plans to go by a new name, “Geodis Park,” which refers to a French supply chain company with its U.S. headquarters in Tennessee. The name also marks the stadium’s international pursuits.
The first home game is scheduled for May 1, and more than 20,000 tickets have already been sold for upcoming matches. With a capacity of 30,000, the stadium will be the biggest soccer-specific stadium in the U.S. and Canada, and Mayor John Cooper says he’s optimistic they’ll host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Clarification: This story originally stated Geodis Park would be the biggest stadium in North America. It has been edited to clarify that it would be the biggest stadium built specifically for soccer in the U.S and Canada.
