WPLN producer Alexis Marshall has received a Fulbright scholarship to travel to Germany.
Marshall was selected, alongside 25 young U.S. journalists and students, for a weeklong intensive seminar in Germany called the Berlin Capital Program. She’ll be meeting members of the media and experts in various fields, and visiting sites around Berlin.
Marshall is the morning producer at WPLN News, and she reports often on the economy and the immigrant experience in Middle Tennessee.
Marshall applied to the program because of her interest in Germany’s labor market and in studying how the nation has grappled with the darker aspects of its history. What Marshall learns will inform her work at WPLN News.
“I can’t wait to take what I learn in this program and incorporate it into my work here in Middle Tennessee,” Marshall says. “Ultimately, I hope our listeners are the folks who benefit most from this Fulbright opportunity.”
This news comes a month after WPLN news director Emily Siner was selected to participate in the Fulbright U.S. Scholar program. Siner received a three-month grant for teaching and research in Ireland, starting late August. Senior editor Chas Sisk will serve as interim news director.
“It’s a valuable opportunity for local journalists to learn from journalists in other countries,” Siner says. “It gives us a chance to compare similarities and assess our own local issues from a bird’s-eye view. That’s powerful.”
