The victims of Monday night’s single-engine airplane crash in West Nashville were Canadian citizens, including two adults and three children. There were no survivors.
Investigators shared new details at a briefing Tuesday, noting that it is still too early to share a cause for the crash, or details about the pilot’s qualifications.
The Piper PA-32 took off from the area of Milton, Ontario. The Metro Nashville Police Department says the pilot radioed John C. Tune Airport at about 7:40 p.m. asking for emergency permission to land, and that he reported that his engine had shut down. Air traffic controllers cleared a runway and urged the pilot to glide the plane to a landing. But minutes later, he alerted the tower that he wouldn’t be able to make it.
The plane crashed into the ground near exit 202, just behind the Nashville West Costco. No buildings or vehicles were damaged. The incident caused significant traffic delays on the interstate, but all lanes were open by Tuesday morning.
The National Transportation Safety Board expects to share more information in about 10 days, and a full investigation will take about nine months.
