A U.S. Army intelligence analyst at Ft. Campbell has been arrested and indicted for federal conspiracy charges, including bribery and selling national defense information to China.
The following charges were announced Thursday afternoon by the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, Henry C. Leventis:
- conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information
- exporting technical data related to defense articles without a license
- conspiracy to export defense articles without a license
- bribery of a public official
The indictment alleges that Korbein Schultz, from June 2022 until the time of his arrest Thursday, conspired with an individual to disclose “documents, writings, plans, maps, notes, and photographs relating to national defense.” The indictment states Schultz would have had reason to believe the information he shared “could be used to injure the United States or used to the advantage of a foreign nation.”
“Protecting national defense information is absolutely critical to our country’s safety and security,” Leventis said. “The unauthorized sale of such information violates our national security laws, compromises our safety, and cannot be tolerated. Today’s indictment should serve as a reminder of the Justice Department’s vigilance in protecting the United States against any threat to national security, foreign or domestic.”
The indictment lays out an alleged timeline: The conspirator recruited Schultz, who had Top Secret security clearance, and tasked him with gathering classified information relating to a variety of U.S. military weapons systems. Schultz also allegedly gathered and disclosed information related to the United States’ plans if Taiwan ever came under military attack.
The indictment alleges that Schultz was paid about $42,000 in total and had plans to recruit another member of the Army.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
