Today, the state unveiled a new tool in its campaign to stop littering on state highways.
Citizens who see others litter can now call a toll-free hotline to report the incident. An automated recording will ask what kind of item was tossed or blown from the vehicle, its license plate number, make and model, as well as when and where the incident occurred. In response, the Department of Transportation will mail the vehicle’s registered owner a letter that serves as both a reprimand and a reminder of state litter laws.
Littering is punishable by a fine of up to 15-hundred dollars.
Last year, the state spent 11-million dollars on roadside cleanup and litter prevention efforts.
The new hotline is 1-877-8-LITTER, or 1-877-854-8837.
