A little over 100,000 voters turned out to elect Nashville’s next Mayor, Vice-Mayor and Metro councilmembers, but many races, namely the Mayor’s race, remain undecided.
Former Metro Legal Director Karl Dean edged slightly ahead of fomer Congressman Bob Clement. They will face each other in a run-off scheduled for September 11th. Eight council district seats will also be on that ballot. Districts 1, 8, 11, 16, 17, 21, 24, and 33, all had races too close to call. The only at-large seat that was decided last night now belongs to former state representative Tim Garrett. Eight candidates will face each other for the four remaining county-wide seats. Two incumbent councilmembers lost their seats last night. Billy Joe Walls lost to Buddy Baker, and Harold White lost to James Bruce Stanley. Nashville voters also approved a Metro Charter amendment to speed up the special election process when either a council seat or the Mayor’s office become vacant before the term expires.
