Tennessee senators passed state’s first open container law today by a vote of twenty-three to seven. Meanwhile, the House version is stuck in the House Budget Subcommittee.
The bill would make it illegal to drive with an open container of alcohol anywhere in the car. Passage would clear the way for Tennessee to use more money for paving. Currently the federal government earmarks some transportation funding for safety campaigns rather than for paving, because the state has no law charging a driver if an open alcoholic beverage is found in the car.
