Legislation meant to curb the effects of climate change is scheduled for action on the floor of the US Senate today. Both of Tennessee’s Senators have expressed opposition to the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, which would set up a cap-and-trade system.
The measure has already been through one of Senator Lamar Alexander’s committees. Like other Republicans on the Environment and Public Works panel, Alexander isn’t happy with the bill’s proposal to limit fuel production.
Senator Bob Corker characterizes the bill as an out of control spending measure. He’s proposed several amendments. One would create refunds for lower and middle class tax payers, paid for by the funds generated from the auction of emission allowances. In its current form, the bill directs that money towards programs to develop new energy technologies that dramatically reduce pollution. Corker’s other amendments would alter the way emissions allowances are distributed.
