A state legislative panel grilled officials from the Department of Children’s Services yesterday about its abilities to screen foster children and their host families.
The hearing also gauged the department’s compliance with the Brian A settlement. The federal lawsuit alleged abuse and neglect resulting from mismanagement and lack of organization and funding.
Deputy commissioner Bonnie Hommrich says data in a court monitor’s report will help the department make improvements in the way it handles cases
“We want this to be a more transparent relationship and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves to do that.”
Senator Thelma Harper said she struggled to believe in the progress the department touted.
“How can we really believe that you do all of these investigations, and all of this paring, and all the doctors visits and so, when we have so much that we can reflect on your history?”
The joint committee continues its oversight hearings today.
