The state of Tennessee has a new hotline for finding mortgage advice. It came about because of a legal settlement with the nation’s five biggest mortgage servicers.

Tennessee is one of 48 states that negotiated an estimated 25 billion dollars in total relief for homeowners. The deal creates assistance programs for certain groups, including active members of the military whose foreclosures weren’t handled correctly, people who are thirty days behind in their payments, or those whose loans are worth more than the value of their homes. The hotline was created to help people figure out if they qualify.

“There are representatives who can go over your options and also refer you to a free housing counselor in your area.”

That’s Matt Pulley with the Attorney General’s office in an online video announcing the help line. While its main purpose is to help carry out the settlement programs, those counselors are available to anyone who is having trouble making payments or dealing with their mortgage company.
