About a quarter of Metro Nashville’s newly hired teachers are coming from two programs the district is tapping into for the first time.
Teach for America and The New Teacher Project are bringing 140 of the roughly 400 new teachers to Metro. Teach for America is a non-profit that recruits recent college graduates to urban, low-performing classrooms.
The New Teacher Project is similar except it lures working professionals into schools.
Usually Metro hires 500-600 teachers every year, but this year’s budget and hiring freeze kept that number lower.
