On the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Nashville will launch a new initiative for charter schools, the city’s school board approved a new charter school called New Vision Academy.
The educators behind New Vision Academy had 15 days to rework and resubmit their application after being denied last month. They managed to successfully address concerns over who would be running the school daily.
Alan Coverstone, who oversees charter schools in the district, says New Vision will serve 5th – 8th graders. Its goal is to educate while providing an extensive support system for struggling students.
“This school has a dedicated cadre of case managers and other people to be involved in really supporting the social and emotional aspects of students’ lives.”
Four other charter school applicants also resubmitted hoping for approval, but were denied again.
New Vision will be located at Draughons Junior College in South Nashville and will ultimately have close to 300 students.
This will be Nashville’s fourth charter middle school. There are no charter high schools.
