An Old Hickory couple will spend four years in prison for a $1.3
million embezzlement scheme.
In 2004, Jennifer Haney worked in the accounts payable department at
wheelchair manufacturer Permobil. When a worker there was fired, she took
and kept the corporate credit card that worker had used. Over the next three
years her husband, Johnny Haney, posed as the man whose name was on the
card. The couple used it to buy jet skis, car audio equipment, sporting
goods and nearly $200-thousands worth of restaurant meals. They also
used Permobil’s rental car account-which she managed-to obtain cars for
their personal use, racking up more than 50-thousand dollars in fees.
The couple plead guilty in December. At sentencing, the Haneys tried to
argue that all of the expenses they charged were for charity. Judge Aleta
Trauger rejected the claim and sentenced the pair to four years each in
prison and ordered them to repay the company $1.3 million.
