A Tennessee charity aimed at helping veterans faces a $50,000 fine for not providing the services it said it would.
A state investigation found the Tennessee chapter of the Veterans Support Organization illegally raised money in the state, didn’t register as a charitable organization, and didn’t offer housing, job search assistance, bus passes, and other services it claimed to provide to veterans.
In a statement released yesterday, Secretary of State Tre Hargett said legitimate organizations are hurt when illegal charities don’t help those in need. The Rhode Island-based charity is also facing complaints about its fundraising practices in Massachusetts.
