Nashville’s librarians are prepping early for what’s become an annual tradition.
Larry Price has just dropped off two stacks of paper at the Goodlettsville library announcing the dates for the annual “Food for Fines” program.
It doesn’t start until January 10th, but the program is so popular, libraries wanted to start putting up posters before the end of the year.
For every can or package of food brought in, the library will forgive a dollar in fines. For example, if you have $20 in fines, bring in 20 cans of food you’re clear.
The library gives the food to Second Harvest food bank. The program began in 2007. Librarian Katie Buchholtz says patrons look forward to it.
“They’ve been asking about it for at least, a couple of weeks. They’re really excited about the program. We’ve also had people say, ‘oh, well, I’ll pay my fine, but I’ll still come in and bring food for Foods for Fines.”
The library says its goal is to bring in 48,000 pounds of food for Second Harvest, slightly more than last time.
Donations can be dropped off at any library branch, including downtown January 10th through 20th. Food should be packaged in boxes, cans or plastic.
