The Tennessee GOP took a verbal victory lap and prepared for the presidential election at the party’s annual gathering and fund raiser Friday night.
In his opening remarks, Governor Bill Haslam praised his party for its wins in the state legislature- specifically the passage of the budget, tort reform, and charter school reform.
“The end result was, when the legislature left earlier than they had in a long time because of excellent leadership, we could look back and say significant gains were made in our state.”
Each of the following speakers, including Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, both Tennessee Senators, and Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey echoed the governor’s praise and spoke out against President Obama.
The party’s stance against the President was made especially clear by Senator Bob Corker. He said, referencing a Wall Street Journal column, that the current administration has been wrong on every decision.
“Every president, typically their presidency can be defined by a sentence. And for President Obama, who no doubt inherited some troubles, his is going to be when he leaves office, ‘He made things worse.’ What I’m worried about is I don’t think we can stand another four years of making things worse.”
The Statesmen’s dinner was attended by all 7 of Tennessee’s Republican Representatives and both Senators.
