Nashville Rain Expected To Set Records But Not Cause Major Flooding

Nashville’s soggy February is expected to set a record within the next few days. But even with half a foot of rain in the forecast, widespread flooding is unlikely.

The heavy rainfall is expected to push Nashville past its February record of just over 12 inches of rain. Meteorologist Matt Reagan with the National Weather Service says it’s enough to trigger flashbacks to the city’s devastating rainfall nine years ago.

“The question that we’re getting is, you know, ‘is this going to be like 2010?’ And the answer is no. That was, I think, the No. 1 and No. 3 rainiest days on record in Nashville in a span of two days,” Reagan said.

“This is, we’re talking, four to six inches. But we’re spreading it out over six days.”

Forecasters predict the Cumberland River will crest at 38 feet, which is below flood stage. So while people will see high water along the banks, they shouldn’t see it threaten major structures.

Flash flooding, however, is likely. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to use caution and avoid pools of water.
