Tuesday night Nashville’s Board of Education passed on the school district’s first choice for a balanced calendar but did approve a start date of August 1st next year. That will give students a week-long break from class in the fall and an extended spring break, while still getting out for summer by May 24th.
A calendar favored by Metro Schools director Jesse Register would have started in late July, included four more instructional days and two-week breaks in spring and fall. Part of that time would have been used to help students falling behind or for enrichment programs and teacher development. However, that plan would have cost the district an extra $20 million.
