Metro’s auditor will be involved in the investigation into Mayor Megan Barry’s travel spending related to the bodyguard with whom she was having an affair.
The Nashville Internal Audit Committee decided Tuesday that auditor Mark Swann will not pursue his own case, but rather take guidance from the Metro Council’s seven-member special committee.
That still means there could be three concurrent investigations — by the Council’s special committee, the Council’s
Board of Ethical Conduct and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation — but not four.
Vice Mayor David Briley said he favored the auditor bringing his expertise to the investigation but didn’t want to duplicate the council’s other efforts.
“Obviously, everybody wants a full and complete review of what happened and all the circumstances, but I think there’s also an obligation to be frugal about our expenditures,” Briley said.
As it stands, there isn’t specified funding for the council special committee, so Briley asked that the auditor not hire any outside contractors without approval.
Swann’s exact investigative duties could be spelled out Thursday afternoon, when the special committee meets for the first time.
