Nashville’s next mayor will be supportive enough of gay marriage to officiate a same-sex ceremony. The societal hot-button is a non-issue for the field of candidates.
The mayor – like most elected officials – can perform weddings. Assuming the courts overturn Tennessee’s ban on same-sex marriage, WPLN asked the candidates at a forum if they would be willing to lead a ceremony.
“You know, I abhor discrimination of any kind,” real estate developer Bill Freeman said. “I would be proud to perform that marriage.”
The six other major candidates said they’d do the same, some with a simple “yes.”
Former school board chairman David Fox said the city needs “more marriage, not less.” Children are businesswoman Linda Rebrovick’s primary concern, and she said she’s very comfortable that “same-sex marriage homes are a loving environment.”
