A Clarksville lawmaker has been tapped to serve as the nation’s next Army Secretary, thanks in part to Tennessee Senator Bob Corker.
The chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee says he was “proud to recommend” Republican legislator and businessman Mark Green to President Trump.
Green is a state senator representing a district that includes Fort Campbell, where he served much of his Army career. He’s a former Army doctor, veteran of conflicts in the Middle East and the
founder of an emergency room staffing company.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis
says in a statement that Green had his full support during the selection process.
He will next to go through a confirmation process in the Senate.
A Change In The Governor’s Race
Green was
one of the first to enter the race to be Tennessee’s next governor. He had affiliated himself with the Trump wing of the Republican Party. He’d even hired Trump’s Tennessee field director to be one of his top campaign advisers.
Green’s dropping out is going to leave an opening for someone else to step in. State Senator Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet says that she is considering a run for governor.
A special election would need to be held to find a permanent replacement. Green was re-elected to the state legislature just last November.
