Jeb Bush helped the Tennessee GOP raise $600,000 over the weekend at the party’s largest annual fundraiser. The former Florida governor hasn’t officially announced he’s running to be president, but he talked about what a candidate would need to do.
“The next Republican that will win will campaign in the Latino community, will campaign amongst Asian Americans, will campaign in the black churches, will campaign on college campuses.”
Bush was praised by some of Tennessee’s top Republicans.
Senator Lamar Alexander hinted at Bush’s good standing with Latinos, given his support for a
path to legal status for undocumented immigrants.
“We know if we have our eyes open that if we want to win the presidency we’re going to have to appeal to a broad number we haven’t been appealing to in the past several years. He’s shown a capacity to do that.”
In the last two presidential election cycles, Republican primary voters in Tennessee have gone with the more socially conservative candidates. And both former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum are running again this year.
