Dollar General plans to expand more than it did last year, even though it’s already the biggest discount retail chain in the country. In the company’s first quarter earnings report, incoming CEO Todd Vasos said Dollar General plans to add 900 stores by 2016.
The Goodlettesville-based
chain has 12,000 stores in 43 states. But Vasos
says he’s confident his real estate team can find new markets. They want locations where Dollar General can have the advantage of being the first store of its kind.
“That’s probably the most important thing around volume is getting the right site,” Vasos said.
For comparison, Dollar General opened 700 new stores last year.
The company had a successful first quarter and beat analyst expectations. The report comes a day before Vasos, current Chief Operating Officer,
takes over as CEO from Rick Dreiling,
who’s been at the helm for seven years.
