It was a record quarter for Goodlettville-based Dollar General. Sales rose 13 percent in the first three months of the year, to nearly $4 billion. But there’s one area where the discount retailer continues to struggle.
Dollar General has made a name for itself in low-price household items, processed foods, and health and beauty products. It’s not the first place that comes to mind when consumers think of inexpensive clothing. It’s the one area that hasn’t shared in Dollar General’s explosive sales growth.
The company hopes to turn around its apparel business with new brands, and a new vice president who will focus solely on shoes and clothing. CEO Rick Dreiling says he’s seeing some traction with segments like infants and toddlers.
“We’re doing a little bit better in mens. While we’re still struggling on the overall sales numbers, we’re starting to sell more of it.”
Dreiling says he hopes to see better sales numbers for apparel by the end of the year.
