We’ll embark on an ambitious multi-part series on the life and times of bluegrass music in 1980. We’ll take our time, laboriously spotlighting the folks that made the high, blue and lonesome airways sing 40-something years ago, in more or less alphabetical order.
In January, 1980, the government loans Chrysler 1.5 billion dollars; the final Rockford Files TV program is aired; Paul McCartney is arrested for marijuana possession in Tokyo; President Carter announces the U.S. will boycott the Olympics in Moscow; 175,000 attend a Frank Sinatra concert in Rio de Janeiro and the Allegheny River Boys, Bobby Atkins, Doc Watson and Red Allen released some tolerably fine bluegrass.
