A group of Nashville women hope to make a difference in David Briley’s mayoral campaign.
Statistics showing Tennessee women are among the least politically active in the nation spurred the candidate’s wife and mother to try and buck that trend. In ten days, they’ve organized 150 female supporters in a group called “Women for Briley.” Their goal is to reach out to 20-thousand women through phone banks, door-to-door canvassing and house parties.
The group held its first gathering today. Several women shared reasons why they support Briley. Erin O’Hara Block said he caught her eye as a member of Metro Council.
“I watched David’s votes on the council, and all along, sort of before I knew David was gonna be running for mayor thought, wow, there’s a person who really looks at the whole picture of the community and not just one specific thing and tries to vote his conscience in a way that maybe other people don’t.”
Others called him a strong supporter of public education and a leader on the issue of sustainable development.
Briley told the gathering that, if elected, he’d place women and minorities in key roles, saying the city needs a staff that “looks like the community.”
The rally was held at the Hermitage Hotel-a key site in the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave American women the right to vote.
The election for mayor and Metro council is August 2nd.
