MNPD Allowing Officers to Carry AR-15 Weapons

Hemlock Slashes Workforce Due to ‘Significant Economic Challenges’

An economic development win of recent years is turning into a giant sore spot. Monday Hemlock Semiconductor announced it will lay off most of its workforce in March due to weak demand for polysilicon, which is used in the production of solar panels.

Haslam Will Push to Help Some Pay Private-School Tuition

Governor Bill Haslam says he’ll offer a school vouchers proposal to lawmakers, a year after asking them to hold off so he could study the matter. The move gives Haslam some ownership of the proposal, which would divert public school dollars to help kids who can’t afford private school tuition.

Metro Hopes More Poor Families Use Cheap Web Service

Families with a kid getting free lunch at school can get a special deal for cheap home Internet, but relatively few take advantage of it. So to promote the service, Metro educators are telling parents at meetings, sending flyers home with kids, and yes, mentioning it on Facebook.

Vanderbilt Researchers Develop Software for Defense Department Competition

The Department of Defense is putting out a call for tank design. It’s offering an initial one million dollars to draw the blueprints for a new amphibious fighter. The software for the challenge was crafted at Vanderbilt.
