Carr’s Immigration Bills Pass House Subcommittee

State House Puts Off Action on Governor’s Tort Reform Rewrite

Tennessee lawmakers heard more testimony Wednesday on the governor’s tort reform bill that would cap financial awards in some personal injury lawsuits. Governor Bill Haslam has amended his bill to raise those caps, but lawmakers put off a decision on the changes.

Governor’s Charter Schools Bill Approved by Senate Committee

Governor Bill Haslam’s expansion of charter schools was approved by the state Senate Education Committee Wednesday. The bill removes the limits on how many charter schools can open and which students can attend them.

House Speaker Breaks Tie to Keep Anti-Collective Bargaining Bill Moving

The speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives invoked a rarely used privilege in a subcommittee Wednesday to assure the passage of an anti-collective bargaining bill. House Speaker Beth Harwell was the seventh vote to get the measure past a six-six tie in the House Finance Subcommittee.
