Carter Pulls Out Victory in Tight 6th District Democratic Primary

Lawyer and Iraq War veteran Brett Carter squeaked out of a tight Democratic primary in the 6th Congressional District, where Bart Gordon is retiring.

The top three Republican candidates vying to unseat Nashville Congressman Jim Cooper were separated by just 350 votes.

The race to be Tennessee’s next governor narrowed last night. Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam beat out Chattanooga Congressman Zach Wamp and Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey in the Republican primary. He’ll face Democrat Mike McWherter, who was the only candidate on that party’s ballot.

Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam clinched the GOP nomination in the race for governor, while Jackson businessman Mike McWherter skated uncontested through the Democratic primary vote. Two other Republicans had also hoped they’d be facing off against McWherter this fall, but lost out to Haslam, who is part-owner of the Pilot truck-stop company.

A young farmer from Frog Jump easily won the Republican nomination in the 8th Congressional District race. Stephen Fincher captured roughly half the votes, with the rest split between his two main GOP opponents.
