A shooting Tuesday afternoon in Nashville left one person dead and a federal agent hospitalized.
In a short briefing, a Nashville police spokesperson said multiple law enforcement agencies were attempting to make an arrest related to federal drug charges when several shots were fired.
Police identified Corey Daniel Wellman, 40, as the man who fatally shot by law enforcement. Local police say Nashville officers did not fire their weapons and that none were injured.
The injured agent was with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, and a spokesperson with that agency said the agent was receiving medical treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The FBI, meanwhile, will lead the investigation because of the involvement of federal officers.
The incident happened in a parking lot in the 600 block of Murfreesboro Pike, where traffic was disrupted by lane closures.
Members of law enforcement have fatally shot seven people in Nashville this year. Prior to Tuesday, the other six incidents involved gunfire by Nashville officers. Two additional people have fatally shot themselves during interactions with city officers.
