Back in May, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean established a program to clean up the way the city gives funds to nonprofit organizations. The mayor asked three independent panels to recommend grants based on merit.
Today, the mayor announced that he has accepted their recommendations, which focused on community service, domestic violence and education. They approved 26 nonprofits to receive $2 million dollars.
The money was allocated in this year’s operating budget.
The largest award recommended is a $300,000 grant for the Project for Neighborhood Aftercare. Second is a $200,000 award to the Second Harvest Food Bank and third is $196,000 to the YWCA for its domestic abuse shelter.
In all, the three panels reviewed 111 applications. The Metro Council will consider the recommendations August 7th.
